Small Pets & Winter: 4 Things They Need More Of

When the weather turns frosty, our small pets rely on us a little more to keep them happy and healthy. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and other little nibblers have higher energy needs in winter, and a few subtle changes can make a big difference to their wellbeing. Here are the four things your pet needs more of when the temperature drops.

1. More Hay

It’s no surprise that hay tops the list! As the cold sets in, small pets naturally eat more to stay warm and maintain energy. Hay is not just food, it’s their heater, comfort blanket, and entertainment all in one.

Top up generously: Keep racks full and sprinkle extra around their sleeping space.

Upgrade for winter: Our 4.4kg and 8.8kg boxes mean better value and fewer top-ups when your Nibbler’s appetite increases.

2. More Water

Even when it’s chilly, hydration matters just as much as in summer. Indoor heating and drier air can dehydrate small pets without you realising.

  • Check bottles or bowls twice daily
  • Use bottle covers for outdoor pets to prevent freezing
  • Add a second water source to encourage steady drinking

Fresh water helps keep digestion smooth, especially with all that extra hay munching!

3. More Warmth & Comfort

Cold drafts and damp bedding can lead to chills, so make their environment snug and safe. Layer soft bedding, add extra hay for burrowing, and keep enclosures away from cold windows or direct heat.

Tip: Hay is one of the best natural insulators, soft, breathable, and always chewable.

4. More Enrichment

Shorter days mean less outdoor play, so bring the fun indoors! Rotate chew toys, hide small treats in hay piles, or scatter herbs like plantain or chamomile for a scent-based scavenger hunt. Mental stimulation helps prevent boredom (and cheeky furniture nibbling!).
