5 Cold-Weather Care Tips for Small Pets
Winter is on its way, and while we’re layering up, our furry friends rely on us to keep them warm, cosy, and comfortable. Whether your small pets live indoors or outside, colder weather brings new challenges. Here are five simple ways to help your rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets thrive all season long.

1. Keep Them Warm (But Not Stuffy)
If your pets live outdoors, make sure their hutch is well-insulated and raised off the ground. Add a thick layer of bedding, a waterproof cover, and plenty of fresh hay for warmth.
Indoor pets still feel temperature drops too, so keep them away from draughts, windows, and direct heat sources like radiators.
Top tip: Fresh hay is an excellent natural insulator, it traps warmth while giving them something to burrow and nibble through
2. Stock Up on Quality Hay
During winter, small pets naturally eat more hay to maintain energy and body heat. Make sure their rack never runs low!
A healthy hay supply supports digestion, keeps teeth trim, and provides comfort through the colder months.

3. Check Water Twice Daily
Freezing temperatures can turn water bottles or bowls icy before you know it. Check and refill morning and evening, using slightly warm (not hot!) water to help prevent freezing. For outdoor pets, bottle covers or thermal wraps make a big difference.

4. Enrich Their Environment
Cold, dark days mean less outdoor playtime, so bring the fun inside!
Rotate toys, hide small treats in piles of hay, or scatter-safe herbs like chamomile or mint for a scent-based game. Mental stimulation keeps your pet happy, active, and less prone to boredom munching.
5. Keep an Eye on Health
Winter can mask early signs of illness. Keep an eye out for:
- Reduced appetite or droppings
- Hunched posture or less movement
- Runny nose or watery eyes
If you notice anything unusual, contact your vet right away. A little extra attention goes a long way during the colder months.
🌿 Cosy, Happy, and Well-Fed
When temperatures dip, comfort starts with hay. Keep your small pets warm, healthy, and endlessly nibbling this winter with fresh, field-dried, hand-sorted hay, just as nature intended.
