Hay Type: Best of Both

Our Hay can seem expensive versus other hays on the market, but we firmly believe in the old adage “you get what you pay for”.  That, though, doesn’t answer your question, so here are the two main reasons our hay is great value for money.

Firstly, in terms of cost per kg of hay eaten, you’ll find we’re cheaper!  Why? There’s very little of our hay goes into the bin versus low-price hay. Here’s why…

  • Dust free – we hand sieve our hay to minimise the amount of dust packed in the box, which has two benefits for you:
  • 99% of the product is edible hay unlike cheaper brands which have a high content of dust you need to throw away.
  • Your house isn’t getting covered in dust and you’re not sneezing or wheezing from hay dust
  • Hand-sorted – the team remove brown and dead leaves from the hay before it gets packed in the box, meaning there’s more nutritious goodness in every box
  • Fresh & nutritious – our hay is dried in the sun keeping it fresher, greener, and lovely smelling, so your little furry friend goes mad for it

But it’s not just the hay you’re paying for, our packaging is more expensive but we think it’s worth it. Here’s why:

  • Better Materials - Cardboard costs much more than shrink wrapped plastic, but It’s fully recyclable so there’s no waste or plastic going to landfill. (And our inner bag is compostable)
  • Easier to Store - The box is it easier to store in your home (and can be a little edible playground for your furry friend, just don’t let them eat too much of it!)
  • Less Mess - The easy to open and re-closable box stops hay going all over your home after opening
  • Longer Lasting – closing the box lid keeps the hay out of sunlight and fresher for longer than shrink-wrapped hays

Our hay is gently dried under the sun in open fields, never in a barn or using heavy machinery. This natural method helps keep the important vitamins and minerals your nibblers need to stay healthy and happy. It also brings out the fresh, natural flavor and aroma, making it extra tempting—even for picky eaters. Plus, our eco-friendly process reduces our impact on the planet, so you can feel great about choosing Nibble & Gnaw for your furry friends.

General Recommendations

  • Unlimited Hay: For animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus, hay should be available at all times to support digestion and dental health.
  • Quality Matters: Always ensure hay is free from dust, mold, and pesticides. Opt for hay that is green and has a fresh smell.
  • Variety for Nutritional Balance: Offering a mix of hays (timothy, orchard, meadow) can enhance nutritional diversity and prevent boredom.
  • Clean and Fresh: Replace any soiled hay daily to prevent contamination from urine or faeces.

This guide ensures your small pets have the right amount of hay for optimal health, happiness, and well-being. Keep their diet varied, fresh, and clean for the best results!

Wish I had discovered Nibble&Gnaw Sooner!

I can't believe one box lasted her 6 weeks, such a difference when she's actually eating all the hay and not pulling it all out in search of one tasty strand like she did before!!! I have saved a fortune, it's so cost effective. Also can I just add that I really love the biodegradable packaging - if only all pet food was as ethical! Wish I had discovered Nibble&Gnaw sooner and very proud to support a local business too 💖
Amanda McCullough, Northern Ireland

The best of both box has a 2.2kg* bag of first cut Tiomthy Hay and a 2.2kg bag of second cut Timothy Hay.  Which means you can give your furry friend a lovely mixed hay box every time, rather than just the one type!

First Cut Timothy Hay is tougher and contains lots of long stems and seed heads. Second Cut is softer than first cut, darker green, and is a mix of stems and leaf with fewer seeds.

*bags are 4.4kg of each in our larger 8.8kg pack

Our fresh-smelling, lovely green, Ultra-premium Timothy Hay has the perfect nutritional balance for your small animal. It's perfect to nibble and gnaw on which reduces their boredom when you're not around and it protects your rabbit from bloat and other tummy problems. A wonder food for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters and degus.

The First Cut part of our pack contains plenty of long stem Timothy Hay which is the perfect length and texture, with just the right amount of fibre, to naturally wear down your rabbit's teeth during chewing.
This helps you avoid the high costs (upwards of £65 per time) of having your vet file their teeth and the risk to your rabbit's life from being under general anaesthetic.

Your Nibble & Gnaw Timothy Hay arrives in a re-closable cardboard hay box, with the hay packed into a 100% biodegradable bag. We do this for four reasons: the bag is really easy to open, hay doesn't fall out everywhere when you open the bag; it is easy to store; reduces mess and waste for every-day use. When your small animal has finished the last tasty morsel, your biodegradable plastic bag breaks down best if you place it in your black bin, and the cardboard hay box can be recycled.

We 100% quality check our hay boxes when hand packing to make sure that what you receive is only our lovely pure timothy hay free of unwanted nasty surprises from the field that could harm your small animals.  We also remove the dust and brown leaf by first passing the hay through a blow tunnel, and then remove as much remaining dust as possible when we're hand packing, as we don't want any small animal (or any human) to suffer respiratory problems from our Timothy Hay.
