Degu Hay

Hay is the most important part of your degus’ diet. Our ultra premium, long stem and dust free hay is sourced from the lush fields of Canada and is the perfect addition to your degus’ diet. It provides essential fibre, which aids in digestion as well as helping maintain dental health by providing natural chewing behaviour. Forget feeding processed pellets that don’t provide your degu what they need to stay healthy. Hay in their diet is so much more important than feeding commercial pellets, that do nothing for your pet! If you want to switch to hay, don’t feed them cheap hay filled with nasty dust that can damage their airways and affect their breathing! Instead feed Nibble&Gnaw to make sure your degu lives their happiest and healthiest life!

What is timothy hay

Timothy hay is the most popular choice of hay for degu owners across the UK. We believe in it so much that it’s the only hay we offer!

Our dust free hay has some amazing benefits for your degus’ health! It has the perfect balance of fibre and other essential nutrients which helps their digestive health, as well as promoting proper dental health for your degu. There is a reason why it is recommended by veterinarians and small pet experts all across the world!

Can Degu's eat hay

Absolutely, yes! Hay should make up about 80% of a guinea pigs’ diet! We recommend that you feed your degu Timothy hay, due to the benefits it has over other types of hay. For example, Alfalfa hay, while it may be high in protein and calcium, it is low in fibre, which doesn’t help with digestive health as much timothy hay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our ultra premium first cut Timothy hay made up of coarse, long stems that contains lots of seed heads and is ideal for bigger degus’. Not only does it help with your degus’ digestion it also helps prevent issues such as overgrown and maloccluded teeth by evenly wearing down their teeth. Second cut Timothy hay is softer than our first cut Timothy hay, it is packed full of sweet leafy greens. We suggest that you feed this to your degu, however at times they can prefer first cut. Both options are suitable for your degus’ digestive and dental health. If you aren’t sure what hay your degu likes we have a ‘try me’ box which includes both types of hay.

Nibble&Gnaw Timothy hay must be the main staple of a degus’ diet! If you are feeding it to your guinea pig for the first time then it should be introduced slowly to avoid any digestive issues. It is suitable for degus over 3 weeks. They should have constant access to hay as it should make up a majority of their diet.

We recommend you store Timothy hay in a cool, dry place to prevent mould. You should keep it in a well-ventilated area that isn’t exposed to direct sunlight. Our 100% recyclable box is perfect for storing your hay; we also include a biodegradable insert bag that maintains freshness.
